When Facebook recently made a significant change to the EdgeRank algorithm that increased the importance of Negative Feedback, we spent time to better understand how it’s impacting Pages.

Reporting Negative Feedback

Facebook defines Negative Feedback as:

  • Hide : hide this story
  • Hide All : hide all stories from a Page
  • Report Spam
  • Unlike Page

Establishing a Baseline

First, we established a baseline understanding of a typical Page’s Negative Feedback. After studying over 5,000 Pages average Negative Feedback per Unique Person Reached per post, we found the median Negative Feedback per post is 0.03%.

How Different Industries Are Impacted

Next, we wanted to take a look at the Highest & Lowest offending Page categories. We looked at the 25 Largest categories which resulted in the following:

Highest

  1. Travel/leisure
  2. Food/beverages
  3. Health/medical/pharmaceuticals

Lowest (1 being the lowest)

  1. Consulting/business services
  2. Internet/software
  3. Entertainment

How Are Fans Reporting Negative Feedback?

  • Hide Post : 76%
  • Hide All Posts From Page : 16%
  • Report as Spam : 8%
  • Unlike Page : <1%

Fortunately for Page Admins, most Facebook users will hide a single post as opposed to hiding all of them (hide all). This gives Admins an opportunity to engage these users in the future.

We believe that the severity of Negative Feedback is as follows:

hide > hide all > spam > unlike

What Drives Negative Feedback?

We analyzed what drove Negative Feedback on over 25 large and successful Pages. Negative Feedback correlates closely with the engagement of the content. The more engagement a piece of content received, the more Negative Feedback it typically got. The key to understanding this relationship is to identify when that piece of content received more than expected Negative Feedback. You can help adjust for this correlation by analyzing Negative Feedback per Impression.

Images are a main source of Negative Feedback. This is most likely due to their ability to drive engagement as well. It’s also likely that images, such as memes, are being abused and therefore increasing Negative Feedback.

What Can I Do To Prevent Negative Feedback?

Understand why people have become fans of your Page. People “like” Pages for a variety of reasons—understand their expectations and deliver content that is within those expectations. When users find that their expectations are not being met, you’ll most likely start to see Negative Feedback rise.

    Given what negative feedback can do to a company’s reach, what’s stopping your competitors from creating fake profiles, subscribing to your posts, and then giving everything you post negative feedback? Does Facebook track user activity to seek out that kind of misuse?

      Great question. Facebook’s gotten pretty good at detecting fake profiles, but it may work on a small scale.

    I also have someone who seems to report a whole load of my liker’s comments on my posts!!! Can I find out who they are to ban them?

    I then ‘not spam’ all the comments, will this help reduce the negative feedback?

    How do ads play into this? If I promote a post, which I assume Facebook wants me to do, and then someone gets annoyed that the post is in their feed – marks it as spam or hides – does that negatively impact my score? I also had someone contact me about removing them from my “list” yesterday because a sponsored story showed up in their feed. Facebook has been promoting the sponsored story ads, but I worry about this negatively impacting my page. Ads have been good for me typically, but I also don’t want to take a hit on my page quality using them.

    If someone decides to unfollow a post (potentially because the amount of activity that would continue to notify them), is that considered negative activity? I personally unfollow to avoid getting everyone’s comments on my phone or computer.

      Great question! It is not listed as an official “Negative Feedback Type”.

    So, feedback is always something good because it allows you to adjust.
    However, in the case of FB negative feedback is not of much help.
    I can’t see if anybody hides my posts, reports me as spam or unlikes me. The only thing I can see is the total of unlikes on a given day.
    Therefore, I wouldn’t really call a feedback.
