We’ll be live-blogging Facebook’s News Feed event today at 1pm ET. Facebook will be “taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed” (#EdgeRank) & discussing “a specific update to organic ranking that’s coming up.”
We will be the first tell you how this will impact your strategy. Updates will be displayed chronologically below.
How is EdgeRank calculated as explained by Facebook? From Facebook directly:
- How often you interact with the friend, Page, or public figure (like an actor or journalist) who posted
- The number of likes, shares and comments a post receives from the world at large and from your friends in particular
- How much you have interacted with this type of post in the past
- Whether or not you and other people across Facebook are hiding or reporting a given post

Facebook looks at recently created stories and processes it through the EdgeRank algorithm. It looks a few difference factors: the relationship between the users, how much engagement it has, and it renders it a score. This is exactly how we’ve explained EdgeRank in the past.

Having users engage/click on your FB ads do increase Affinity (organic).

Facebook tested a 3rd variation. Chronological by Last Actor, this experiment failed.
Story Bumping has not been tested on mobile, yet.

Facebook will soon test a stronger chronological tweak.
As we mentioned before, a more chronological tweak has resulted in less engagement (and less of a quality visit to Facebook). More tests will be done to perfect balance.

Last Actor (seemingly a new change to EdgeRank) has been A/B tested with encouraging results.

Last Actor is a factor in Affinity. Last Actor is recorded for the last 50 interactions you’ve made.
This is essentially how recent Affinity is calculated. As a Page, you’ll want to be in that last 50 interactions to increase likelihood of success.

The news feed also takes into consideration whether the post has been seen or not. This can impact whether it’s displayed.

Affinity is the strongest factor in determining what is displayed (and when displayed).
A/B Testing is a bit part of Facebook’s process before releasing EdgeRank changes to the rest of the public. [Side note: We've talked to former Facebook employees who've said, less of an algorithm resulted in less FB usage]

Facebook will begin to blog more often about algorithm changes. Facebook users have about 1,500 stories per day (on average) that they could see.

Facebook wants to “create a balance” between publishers and users. “We don’t use the term EdgeRank to to describe how it ranks items in the news feed anymore”. Facebook has been using the term “news feed algorithm”, however the most popular unofficial term is still EdgeRank. Call it what you will, we still analyze it!

Facebook is approaching the 7 year anniversary of their News Feed. The first Facebook Group to 1 million members was to protest the News Feed.
